Heel Tough Blog: Special Teams Starter Probably Out For The Season

Nell Redmond- USA Today Sports

The football program provided updates on the statuses of the injured players that are attempting to return in the near future prior to Mack Brown’s press conference, but it was Brown himself that broke the news about the most significant injury on the team.

During his presser, Brown confirmed the news that was reported on Saturday night’s broadcast that kickoff specialist Liam Boyd is “probably out for the season”. Boyd handled 20 kickoffs in the first four games of the season, averaging 64.1 yards per kickoff and sending 13 of them for touchbacks. He also handled the placekicking duties for the team in the NC Central game, nailing all seven of his extra point attempts as well as a 36-yard field goal in place of the injured Noah Burnette.

With Boyd on the shelf, true freshman kicker/punter Lucas Osada will take over the kickoff duties and will be the primary backup for Burnette. Osada has 14 kickoffs in the last two weeks, averaging 64.4 yards per kickoff and sending 11 for touchbacks. He may also eventually be needed at punter if the struggles for Tom Maginness continue.
