Bill Belichick hasn’t been the coach of the Tar Heels for a full day and already two of the Tar Heels that have entered the transfer portal have withdrawn their names.
Yesterday, it was the team’s starting center Austin Blaske who announced he would be returning to Chapel Hill and earlier today he was joined by starting left guard Aidan Banfield. He will have three years of eligibility left with the team.
In his first season in Chapel Hill, Banfield started nine of the ten games that he played in while dealing with multiple lower body issues throughout the season. He graded out very solidly across the board according to PFF, especially as a true freshman. He posted a 60.9 run block grade, a 65.3 pass block grade and a 62.8 overall grade while allowing three sacks and 18 quarterback pressures.
Just like with Blaske, this is an important returning piece along the offensive line. While he might have some areas to improve on this offseason, he showed plenty of promise and looks like he has what it takes to be the anchor of the offensive line in the future.
