For the second time in two days, the Tar Heels have lost a member of their offensive line room to the transfer portal.
On Tuesday afternoon, graduate offensive lineman Zach Greenberg announced via social media that he was entering his name back into the transfer portal after spending just one season in Chapel Hill. He will have one year of eligibility remaining wherever he lands.
Greenberg, who transferred to Carolina last offseason from Division III Muhlenburg, played in four games in his lone season with the program, including one start for the team at center against NC Central. He also played 60 snaps in the team’s game with Charlotte the week prior to that start after starting center Austin Blaske was injured in the first quarter. Following the NC Central game, he took snaps in just two more games in the final eleven weeks of the season.
He graded out very well, especially in pass protection, in the 143 snaps that he played this season. He finished the season with a 70.8 run block grade, an 81.7 pass block grade and a 76.1 overall grade according to Pro Football Focus. His best performance of the season came in that lone start against NC Central where he finished with a 73.7 run block grade, a 78.4 pass block grade and a 78.5 overall grade.
His departure is a little bit of a blow to the interior of the offensive line, especially with Willie Lampkin graduating. One would have thought Greenberg could compete for the starting job at right guard this offseason and been the depth center that he was this year, but the Tar Heels will now almost certainly be looking for a transfer to add there when they eventually make their hire at head coach.
