Heel Tough Blog: Second Starting OL Enters Transfer Portal

For the third time today, the Tar Heels have a starter from this year’s team that has entered the transfer portal.

As first reported by Tar Heel Illustrated, true freshman left guard Aidan Banfield has officially put his name in the transfer portal. He will have three years of eligibility remaining wherever he eventually lands.

In his lone season in Chapel Hill, Banfield started nine of the ten games that he played in while dealing with multiple lower body issues throughout the season. He graded out very solidly across the board according to PFF, especially as a true freshman. He posted a 60.9 run block grade, a 65.3 pass block grade and a 62.8 overall grade while allowing three sacks and 18 quarterback pressures.

This is another substantial blow to the interior of this offensive line group which will have just one player who played significant snaps for the team in there (Malik McGowan) returning if the new staff can’t find a way to bring him back. Like center Austin Blaske, Banfield should be seen as a priority for the team’s next head coach to bring back once they get themselves situated.
