For the second time in the last two days the Tar Heels have lost an edge rusher to the transfer portal.
As first reported by Inside Carolina, the Tar Heels are officially losing junior edge rusher Mali Hamrick to the transfer portal after he sat out all of spring practice. He will have two years of eligibility wherever he ends up continuing his career.
Hamrick spent the last three years in Chapel Hill and played in just 16 games with the majority of his snaps coming in his first season. He played 145 snaps between defense and special teams in 2022 as a true freshman and played just 18 snaps this season after missing last year due to a season-ending knee injury suffered in the spring. He finishes his Tar Heel career with 11 total tackles.
His departure is nowhere near as impactful as Beau Atkinson’s is, but this is still another blow to the depth at the position. The good news is that the Tar Heels should be pretty aggressive about adding to the room alongside what they have already brought in this offseason to try and add a little that depth that they need here.
