After showing interest in a big man from Bucknell last night, the Tar Heels turned their attention to the guards in the transfer portal, and one that they have familiarity with, as San Diego State guard, Nick Boyd is set to visit Chapel Hill, becoming the first transfer to set an official visit this off-season. Per Inside Carolina, Boyd will be on Carolina’s campus today for an official visit, less than two weeks after San Diego State lost to Carolina in the First Four of the NCAA Tournament. Boyd had a successful season last year for the Aztecs, averaging 13.4 points, and 3.9 assists, while starting all 31 games that San Diego State played in 2024-25.

Boyd spent last season with San Diego State, but before that, he played three years at Florida Atlantic, and was on that Final Four team back in 2023. In his career, Boyd has played in 119 games, started 82 of them,  and he has career averages of 9.4 points per game, 3.4 rebounds, 2.5 assists, while shooting 42% from the field, and 37% from behind the arc.

In the loss to UNC in the First Four, Boyd struggled, scoring 12 points, but was just 4-14 from the field, and 2-8 from behind the arc.

It’s not a surprise that Carolina has been interested in a handful of guards in the transfer portal, after losing RJ Davis to graduation, and Elliot Cadeau to the transfer portal. At the beginning of the week, Carolina was aggressive targeting players from the power conference level but it has dipped down to the mid-major level over the last couple of days. Their interest in potential transfer guards may rise, as they wait on a decision from Ian Jackson, who’s been non-commital about returning to UNC, after seeing his role diminish as the season moved along, playing just 10 minutes in the season-ending loss to Ole Miss.
