Heel Tough Blog: Randy Clements Out of the Hospital; Hoping to Return This Weekend

Inside Carolina

In yesterday’s media availability, Tar Heel head coach Mack Brown updated the health of offensive line coach Randy Clements, who was recently hospitalized with a digestive tract infection.

Brown said Clements recently underwent a “small procedure” to treat that infection which first developed back in the summer and worsened recently, spreading to other areas of his body.

Brown divulged that the original plan was that he would be out of the hospital in time for this past Saturday’s game with NC Central, but that the recovery took a little longer.

“I've told him and Polly, his wife, this is very serious, so the most important thing is you take care of yourself. I mean, this is football. And you don't need to try to get out too early and get sick and have to go back, and put yourself in danger. So it's tough for me, because he wants out. And if I talk to him, he's wanting me to get him out, and that's not my job. I can't get him out. So we just keep our thoughts and prayers with him, and those young ones will just keep coaching them.”

Brown would reveal later on in the day during his coach’s show, ‘Mack Brown Live’ that Clements was out of the hospital. “He did get out this afternoon, so hopefully we’ll have him back this week and make sure he’s safe and doing well. He’s had a tough time here to start the season.”

For the time being, the Tar Heels are leaning on graduate assistant Kyle Fuller to coach the tackles and voluntary assistant Corey Gaynor to coach the interior guys. Fuller was a former offensive tackle at Baylor under Clements, while Gaynor played under him a year ago for the Tar Heels. Both guys seemed to handle things well over the weekend when the offensive line paved the way for 330 rushing yards and allowed just two quarterback pressures.
