This weekend was the last chance for the Tar Heels to make a final pitch for one of the team’s biggest remaining targets in the 2024 class. 4✭ ATH Jonathan Paylor will make his commitment on Friday and on Saturday he took one last trip to Chapel Hill.
He was a part of a massive group of visitors from the 2024 class that was on campus today for the Carolympics, this year’s version of the yearly recruiting gathering on the final weekend of the month of July. This came after he was on campus at NC State yesterday, another team that is making a push for him late.
Yesterday afternoon before heading down the road to Chapel Hill, Paylor made the announcement that he will be moving his commitment up to Friday after initially setting the date for Saturday. Five teams remain in the running for him heading into his decision. The Tar Heels are joined by Maryland, NC State, Penn State and South Carolina.
Getting Paylor back to campus one last time with the rest of the commitments in this class is a major boost to the Tar Heels' slim chances to actually get it done. There are some rumors that say things are still up in the air at this point and that could mean the door is still open for the Tar Heels to step through. It feels like this is still a bit of a stretch, though, as NC State looks to be the team pushing South Carolina that has the best chance to overtake. Still, with how often he has been to campus and the track record that Lonnie Galloway has, it’s hard to fully eliminate the Tar Heels until it is over.
