The Tar Heels have been waiting on the draft decision from star running back Omarion Hampton and on Sunday night he finally revealed that decision.

Hampton announced via social media that he will be foregoing his final season of eligibility and entering the 2025 NFL Draft. He did not state in the post whether or not he will be playing in the bowl game which falls in line with the rumors that he is still practicing during the team’s bowl game preparations.

If Hampton is to play, he will have a legitimate chance to break the program’s single-season rushing yards record which is currently held by the legendary Don McCauley (1,720). He has rushed for 1,660 yards and 15 touchdowns on 281 carries and caught 38 passes for 373 yards and two touchdowns in the first twelve games this season. This follows a sophomore season that ranked amongst the best in program history, as well, where he ran for 1,504 yards and 15 touchdowns and caught 29 passes for 222 yards and a touchdown. Entering the bowl game, Hampton sits fourth in program history in career rushing yards (3,565) and tied for fourth in career rushing touchdowns (34).

This decision doesn’t come as a shock and is a big part of the reason why the team is aggressively looking for help at the position in the transfer portal. The team will lean heavily on whichever transfer they bring alongside true freshman Davion Gause, who could be in line to start if he can build off the flashes he’s shown this season.
