With the Tar Heels wrapping up their day in Charlotte for the ACC Kickoff Media Days, attention around the Tar Heel football program shifts back to the recruiting trail as one of the team’s top remaining targets is set to announce his decision.
2022 4✮ RB Omarion Hampton announced earlier this month that his announcement on Thursday, closing down his recruitment a little less than a month before the start of his final season at Cleveland High School in Clayton, NC. On Monday, he set the stage for his recruitment by releasing his final three schools, Florida, Penn State and, of course, Mack Brown and the Tar Heels. The commitment will be streamed live on CBS Sports HQ at 2:00 PM EST according to Brian Dohn of 247Sports.
Heading into the commitment, there might be some cautious optimism after what all went down with the Daylen Everette situation this past weekend and rightfully so. However, this is a recruitment that the Tar Heels appear to be much more firmly in the driver’s seat of than the Everette recruitment thanks to an official visit to Chapel Hill in the final weekend of June. That visit appeared to quill any of the rumors that Penn State had made up major ground for him and potentially even taken over as the leader in the clubhouse following his official to Happy Valley. That last stop in Chapel Hill, though, closed out a month that was jammed packed with unofficials to campus and seems to have the Tar Heels as the prohibitive favorite now.
The expert predictions seem to back this thinking up, as well. 247Sports has seven crystal ball predictions in for him as of the night before, all of which are going in favor of the Tar Heels and all of which have a confidence level of six or higher. Rivals Futurecast paints a very similar picture, as all 11 who have made a prediction are thinking Hampton will be wearing Carolina blue shortly after his announcement.
There appeared to be some moments of uneasiness down the stretch of this commitment, but at this point, it looks as if the Tar Heels will hold on to add a valuable in-state skill position player to this class.
Prediction: North Carolina
