The Tar Heels are in the initial stages of the search to find Mack Brown’s replacement and there is already one candidate who has appeared to turn down the job.
On Thursday afternoon, Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator and former Tar Heel offensive lineman Arthur Smith confirmed to the media that the Tar Heel athletic department had contacted him about their head coach opening but that he is content with where he is at right now.
"I've got an awesome job here. Love it here in Pittsburgh. It's probably a different mindset than I had four, five years ago, where any head job, I thought I would walk there and take it."
This is the first public report on the job's status, and while it appears a guy turning down the job, it is at least a step toward a hiring that needs to be made sooner rather than later. Smith was always going to be a risky hire because he has spent the majority of his career coaching at the NFL level, so it’s hard to be that disappointed about this news. The hope now is that, over the next few days, we can receive some positive updates about the status of the search and get an idea of what the timeline looks like for the athletic department to make the new hire with the 2025 recruiting class’s early signing day approaching quickly.
