After losing Ian Jackson to the transfer portal yesterday, the Tar Heels have found their first possible replacement option for the former five-star recruit, in Michigan State transfer Tre Holloman, who entered the portal last week. Holloman was an integral part of the Spartans' success last season, which saw them win a Big 10 regular season title, earn a #2 seed in the NCAA Tournament, and make it to the Elite Eight, before falling short to Auburn, denying them a trip to the Final Four. He averaged 9.1 points per game last season, with 1.9 rebounds, and 3.7 assists, on 37% shooting from the field, and 33% from behind the arc. In his career, Holloman has played in 106 games at the Big 10 level, is a career, 5.5 point per game scorer, and is a lifetime 40% shooter, including shooting 36% from behind the arc.
Even before Holloman officially went portaling, UNC was seen as a likely landing spot for Holloman had he ever decided to transfer, and he officially set his visit to UNC, along with Baylor, NC State, and Villanova. The dead period ends this Thursday so Holloman will be on campus later this off-season, but his recruitment is expected to move quickly, starting this weekend.
Hubert Davis has done a nice job adding size to the roster, landing Henri Veesaar from Arizona, and shooting with the addition of West Virginia transfer Jonathan Powell out of the transfer portal. Now Davis, his staff, and Jim Tanner have to rebuild the backcourt after RJ Davis's graduation and the departures of Elliot Cadeau and Ian Jackson from the transfer portal. With Seth Trimble expected to return, Davis needs to ensure that Trimble isn’t forced to play out of position, so they need to find a lead guard, and a scoring guard, to to keep Trimble in the role that’s best suited for him, and not put the incoming freshmen to play a role they aren’t ready for.
