Heel Tough Blog: Michael Lombardi Quills Rumors About Belichick Leaving

Yesterday, the worst nightmare of some Tar Heel fans when it came to the Bill Belichick experiment came into focus.

According to a report from Tom Peliserro of the NFL Network, the Raiders have contacted him about their vacancy, after firing Antonio Pierce yesterday. That shouldn’t come as a surprise, as his former QB, Tom Brady, is a minority owner of the Raiders, and has a say in matters like these. In addition to the Raiders, the report does suggest that the Jacksonville Jaguars could also express interest in Belichick, after firing Doug Pederson earlier this week.

On Thursday, new Tar Heels general manager Michael Lombardi stopped by the Pat McAfee Show to talk about those rumors. He told McAfee that Belichick and himself is “completely committed, 1,000% committed” to UNC. Lombardi also said the report from Pelissero was “a complete falsehood”. “He committed it to me. He committed it to the University. There's been no conversation about anything.”

This is definitely a relief to hear, but it doesn’t mean that this is over just yet. One would expect Raiders minority owner Tom Brady to continue to bring Belichick’s name up in the meetings until the team hires a new coach. The hope is that the organization settles on a different name sooner rather than later because the more desperate they become, the more Brady may be pushing to offer. Even then, though, it may not matter because of how committed Belichick seems to at least spend this season in Chapel Hill.
