The search for the new Tar Heel football head coach is coming to its end and it appears that one of the team’s finalists has turned down the team’s initial offer.
According to David Glenn of the North Carolina Sports Network, he is hearing that current Tulane head coach Jon Sumrall and the program have already talked terms of a contract and he has denied the initial offer.
This means that if the Tar Heels want him they are going to have to pay more money, something that has become tougher to stomach after the way Tulane finished the season. Entering last week’s matchup with Memphis, Sumrall had Tulane in position to host the AAC Championship Game and challenge the Big 12 champ for a spot in college football. Since then, though, his team has gotten outplayed and outcoached by Memphis and Army. The worst part is that the defense, which Sumrall calls himself, was the biggest issue in both of those games.
Those performances in games where his team were favorites should have the Tar Heels hesitant to give Sumrall more money. While those could be because of the distraction of the interest from power conference schools, the Tar Heel program can’t be willing to overpay someone who loses games they shouldn’t after that was the biggest issue under Mack Brown.
With Sumrall being the only reported finalist for the job, it could mean that the search has been opened back up. It could also mean that the program is closer to hiring Bill Belichick, especially if the reports that they will have a decision by Sunday are true. It should be an interesting next 24 hours in Chapel Hill.
