Heel Tough Blog: Jon Sumrall Officially Removes Name from Job Searches

We thought the news tonight would be about the Tar Heels hiring their 36th coach in program history, but instead the only news is that one candidate has officially pulled his name out of the running.

According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Tulane head coach Jon Sumrall has informed school officials that he will “not be pursuing any of the open jobs in this cycle”. This follows a report yesterday from the North Carolina Sports Network that someone in Sumrall’s camp rejected an initial offer from UNC decision makers.

Sumrall met with the media briefly on Sunday following the announcement of the team’s bowl destination and became irritated when he was asked about P4 schools being in contact with him. He insisted that when people call, they call his agent and that very little “gets to him”. He would later amend that to “nothing is getting to me right now”.

With Sumrall now officially out of the running, many feel that the decision is going to come down to legendary NFL head coach Bill Belichick and current Iowa State coach Matt Campbell. The hope is that the decision can come sometime soon with the transfer portal officially open as of 12:00 AM Monday.
