Heel Tough Blog: Jalon Thompson Commitment Preview

The payoffs from the important month of June on the 2024 recruiting trail have begun rolling in for the Tar Heels. Since June 5th, the team has eight commitments, including three of their top four players in the class to this point. The team will hope to add their ninth commitment in a little over a month on Friday afternoon in the form of 2024 3✮ S Jalon Thompson.

Thompson, the No. 63 safety in the class according to 247Sports Composite player rankings, announced on Tuesday that he will be committing at 2:00 tomorrow afternoon. Thompson has not officially narrowed things down but all indications seem to suggest that it is down to two schools.

Carolina and Central Florida are the only two schools that received an official visit from him. His trip to Chapel Hill came in the second weekend of the month following his trip down to Orlando the previous week. Thompson was scheduled to take a third official visit to Pittsburgh in the final week of the month but opted against it, eliminating the Panthers from contention.

The Tar Heels will enter the decision as the favorite. The staff started making a real push for him back in the spring and by May had established as not only a serious contender for him, but the heavy favorite. The wonder, though, was if the staff would take his commitment with higher profile targets on the board that were strongly considering the team as an option. It appears that we have the answer to that question and that Thompson will be a part of what could be a run of commitments in the defensive backfield for the Tar Heels.

Prediction: North Carolina
