The Tar Heels currently sit with 24 commitments in their 2024 class, leaving them with just three uncommitted targets in the cycle. All three of those targets are receivers that hail from the home state and as of Tuesday evening, they now all have a commitment date set.
Earlier this evening, 4✮ ATH Jonathan Paylor announced via social media that he will reveal his decision on August 5th. The commitment will take place at a ceremony at Cummings High School in Burlington, NC at 2:00 PM that afternoon. The decision will come down to the top five he set back on June 27th of the Tar Heels, Maryland, NC State, Penn State and South Carolina.
Back in late May, it felt like the Tar Heels didn’t stand much of a chance in this race. South Carolina had the commanding lead and with NC State and Mayland off in the distance. The Tar Heel staff had to work hard just to get him on campus for an official visit, which they were able to back on the weekend of June 2nd. That visit looked to have given him something to think about and kept the Tar Heels in the race.
The Gamecocks still appear to be the team in control here, but the final weekend of July will be worth watching for him. There have been some rumors floating around that Paylor plans to visit both Chapel Hill and Raleigh that weekend, but not Columbia. If that is the case, this could be a battle in the final few days of his recruitment after it looked like a runaway victory for the Gamecocks.
