After failing to make the 20233 NCAA Tournament last season, Carolina is returning in a big way, earning a #1 seed, for the 2024 NCAA Tournament. Carolina entered Champ Week as a projected two-seed. Still, with early exits from Tennesee, and Arizona in their conference tournaments, combined with UNC’s run to the ACC Tournament final, it paved the way for them to earn the final #1 seed for this year’s tournament.
Going into the Selection Show, Carolina was believed to be battling Iowa State for the final #1 seed. Even though they are a #2 seed in the East Region, they are with UConn, the top overall seed in the tournament, meaning that Iowa State wasn’t even the first two seed according to the selection committee.
With Carolina being the #1 seed in the West Region, it’s the 18th time that Carolina has earned a #1 seed, the most all-time. This is Carolina’s first time being a #1 seed, since 2019, when Carolina made the Sweet 16, before losing to Auburn, who would make the Final Four. As a top seed, Carolina’s record is a healthy 63-12, and since they started seeding the field in 1979, every time Carolina has won the national title, it’s been as a #1 seed.
Up Next: Carolina will begin NCAA Tournament play on Thursday in Charlotte when they face off against the winner of Howard/Wagner in the First Four. Tip time is set for 2:45 PM on CBS.
