The Tar Heels hosted Bill Belichick’s introductory press conference inside the Blue Zone at Kenan Stadium as the new coach of the team fielded questions from the media for the first time. While he said a lot, one of the most notable things that he revealed was that one current staff member will be a part of his staff.
Interim head coach Freddie Kitchens will be sticking around in Chapel Hill in an unspecified role following him leading the team in the bowl game against Connecticut. The past two seasons, Kitchens was a part of Mack Brown’s staff as the tight end coach and run game coordinator, helping the Tar Heels to average 190.8 yards rushing and developing one of the most productive tight end rooms in the conference.
This is a hire that makes sense on a lot of levels, especially with Belichick wanting to run things similar to how things are run in the NFL. Kitchens has plenty of experience at both levels in a majority of different roles and will help bridge the gap between the two levels.
It is unclear what role he will have, but retaining Kitchens is a smart move on Belichick’s part and could go a long way towards retaining key pieces of this roster.
