The Tar Heels appeared to be done with the 2021 recruiting cycle after the conclusion of the early signing period, but the team would extend one final offer in mid-December to 3✮ CB Dontae Balfour. On Wednesday, Balfour will announce his decision and sign his letter of intent to one of his final three schools. Despite entering the running rather late, the Tar Heels appear to be sitting in a good spot heading into Balfour’s decision.
Auburn has been the long time favorite for Balfour, but when he decided to push his decision back to the regular signing period, the door opened for the other two members of his eventual final three. While Auburn still holds the edge in the overall crystal ball edge on both 247Sports and Rivals.com, the recent forecasts on both sites have gone in a different direction. The last six predictions between the two sites have gone in favor of the Tar Heels, including a relatively confident pick of the Tar Heels from 247Sports’ Director of Football Recruiting Steve Wiltfong.
While the Tar Heels may now appear to be the slight favorites heading into his commitment that is set for tomorrow morning at 10:00 AM, as we’ve seen with other targets in this 2021 cycle, it’s not over until the signature is officially sent in. Still, the Tar Heels have to feel confident with the job done by Dré Bly once again, especially with the short turn around that he had after the offer that came on Christmas Eve.
Signing Day 2021 should be a rather quiet one overall, but right now there is reason to be confident that the Tar Heels will be adding one final member to their 2021 haul. This would be yet another nice addition in the defensive backfield and continue to help build depth in a position that has been through the ringer with injuries each of the last two seasons.
Prediction: North Carolina
