For the eighth time this season, a Tar Heel has been named the player of the week in the ACC.
Guard Cormac Ryan received the honor from the conference itself earlier this afternoon after a huge week that culminated on Saturday against the rival Duke Blue Devils. This is the first time that he has won the award in his career and he is the fourth different player to win it this season.
Ryan averaged 22.5 points in the two games the team played this past week. He started it out with a 14-point, 5-rebound performance against Notre Dame in his first meeting of the season with his former team. That game set the tone for what was a career performance in Cameron Indoor Stadium to help lead the Tar Heels to an outright ACC regular season title.
Ryan became just the seventh Tar Heel to score 30 or more points in Durham and the first since Luke Maye scored 30 back in 2019. His 31 points, which came on 8-12 from the field, was the most since his head coach, Hubert Davis, scored 35 against the Blue Devils back in 1992. His six made 3-pointers tied the school record for a game against Duke and made him the only other Tar Heel to hit six on the road against them besides Hubert Davis.
