The Tar Heels coaching search continues and it may have reached its most confusing point this morning.
NFL writer Ollie Connolly is reporting that legendary NFL head coach Bill Belichick has agreed to become the team’s next head coach if his demands are met. According to Connolly, Belichick has sent the school a 400-page “organizational bible” detailing exactly what he demands in terms of structure, payment plans and staffing amongst other things.
When it comes to staffing, Connolly is reporting that the school would have to be willing to invest in two different staffs: his coaching staff and a recruiting staff which would require a college GM. According to Connolly, there is already some hesitancy as to whether or not to meet the demands. The “pushback” is coming from some of the 13 members of the Board of Trustees, which should come as no shock based on the reports that have surfaced in the last couple.
As Connolly put it, this is going to test the Tar Heels’ level of investment in their football program and it’s hard to feel like this is something that the school truly wants. The Board of Trustees already pushing back seems to support this thinking that the school wants the team to be more successful, but on a budget. If the Tar Heels do reject this proposal from Belichick, it is going to make a search that has been difficult so far even more difficult.
According to Connolly, Belichick is expected to receive an answer from the Tar Heel decision-makers within the next 24 hours.
Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports is reporting that the situation may actually be the opposite of what Connolly is reporting. Jones says that conversations are continuing this morning and that “the ball is in Belichick's court”. He also says that the hope is that a conclusion will be reached soon.
At this point, who knows where things stand in terms of reaching an agreement. This is a tough spot for the team to be in and the longer this drags out, the more damage could to this roster in the transfer portal and on the recruiting trail.
