Bill Belichick and the Tar Heels front office staff are ready for the dead period for the holidays to be over so that they can begin hosting some of the biggest and best transfers in the portal, including a player who officially set his visit to campus on Tuesday.
According to Matt Zenitz, transfer portal insider for 247Sports, the Tar Heels will be hosting Chattanooga wide receiver transfer Javin Whatley over the weekend. Whatley will have one of eligibility remaining wherever he lands.
Whatley spent the first four years of his college career with Mocs where he caught 140 passes for 2,125 yards and 18 touchdowns over the past three seasons. He broke on the scene back in 2022 when he caught 29 passes for 451 yards and three touchdowns. His best season came in 2023 as a sophomore as he hauled in 55 catches for 977 yards and nine touchdowns. This season he wasn’t nearly as productive, but still produced very solid numbers, catching 56 passes for 697 yards and six touchdowns.
This interest shows that the team is clearly interested in improving that slot receiver position despite already landing a commitment there in the portal. Whatley would provide with a veteran presence, something that the room lacks outside of Kobe Paysour. He could also be the perfect bridge to fellow transfer Aziah Johnson or holdover Javarius Green in the future.
