After having to wait 2 years to have a Selection Sunday, and the NCAA Tournament, Carolina learned early in CBS’s Selection Show their seed and matchup for the NCAA Tournament that gets underway on Thursday with the First Four, followed by the First Round starting on Friday. Carolina is the #8 seed in the South Region, and will face the #9 seed Wisconsin Badgers on Friday in Indianapolis. The winner would move to play either the #1 seed Baylor Bears or the #16 Hartford.
UNC has history with Wisconsin in the NCAA Tournament under Roy Williams. Back in 2005 the Tar Heels escaped by the Badgers on their way to the Final Four, before eventually cutting down the nets in St. Louis. Back in 2015, Wisconsin got the best of Carolina in a Sweet 16 matchup as the Badgers were on their way to the Final Four, before losing to Duke in the national title game.
This marks the second time under Roy Williams that Carolina is a 8 seed. The last time it happened was in 2013 when Carolina defeated Villanova, before losing to Kansas in the Second Round. But the Tar Heels have history as a 8 seed in the NCAA Tournament in 1990, Carolina made the Sweet 16 after upsetting #1 seed Oklahoma in the Second Round of that tournament. And in 2000, under Bill Guthridge, Carolina made it all the way to the Final Four, after being one of the last teams to be put in the field.
As of right now there isn’t any TV information available for Friday’s game. All of that will be announced once Carolina’s site for the First Round is determined
