After landing big man Henri Veesaar last week, the focus shifted towards the backcourt, as Hubert Davis is tasked with rebuilding that area of the roster, after losing RJ Davis to graduation, and Elliot Cadeau, and Ian Jackson to the transfer portal. That led him to Colorado State transfer Kyan Evans, who committed to UNC earlier this evening, becoming the third transfer to commit to UNC this off-season. Evans started all 36 games last season for the Rams, averaging 10.6 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 3.1 assists, while shooting 47% from the field, and 45% from behind the arc. In their first-round upset of Memphis in the NCAA Tournament, Evans scored 23 points and was 6-9 from behind the arc. Prior to that, he earned All-Mountain West Conference Tournament honors, while being a major factor in Colorado State’s conference tournament championship.
Evans is 6-2, and weighs 175 pounds, and has two years of eligibility left, which could be an asset moving forward, if he makes the transition from the Mountain West level of competition to what he’ll see on a nightly basis playing at Carolina, and in the ACC.
One thing that stands out about Evans's production is how efficiently he scores the basketball, something that will be received with open arms in Chapel Hill after last season. Evans ranked first in the Mountain West Conference play in true shooting percentage (70.3%), first in free throw percentage (88.9%), second in three-point percentage (45.2%), second in effective field goal percentage (66.2%) and fifth in two-point percentage (63.5%). One thing that hurt Carolina last season was inefficient play at times from the backcourt, but if last season is any indication, the Tar Heels are getting an efficient scorer, who will also be an analytical darling for Hubert Davis, who aspires to be more open to that side of the game.
Evans joins West Virginia transfer Jonathan Powell and Arizona transfer Henri Veesaar in Carolina’s transfer portal haul, and there could be more to come this weekend. On Friday, BYU transfer Kanon Catchings, a former top-40 recruit will be on campus, followed by a visit from Michigan State transfer Tre Holloman, who will be in Chapel Hill on Saturday. So far Hubert Davis has achieved what he set out to do this off-season, add size and shooting to a roster in need of both, now he can ensure that he has enough talent and depth, to return the program to the top of the conference, and the national spotlight.
