For the second time in three years, a member of the Tar Heels has endured a battle with cancer.
On Monday night, junior walk-on tight end Cal Tierney announced via social media that he underwent a battle with cancer earlier this offseason. In his post that was later shared by tight ends coach Freddie Kitchens, Tierney revealed that back on February 5th, 2024 he was diagnosed with NLP Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and had to have a lymph node in his neck removed. Over the next three months, he went through four rounds of rigorous chemotherapy and back in early May his PET scan showed that his neck was cancer free and that he was in total remission.
Tierney would go on to extend his gratitude to the coaches, trainers, teammates and the Tar Heel community as a whole for supporting him during his battle. He also confirmed that he will not be on the field with the team this fall and is eyeing a full return by January 2025.
The fact that he is already in remission is outstanding news, but we are still sending thoughts and prayers Cal’s way as he looks to return to the field next year.
