Thursday is the start of what may be a defining stretch for the Tar Heels on the 2022 recruiting trail. That’s when 2022 3✮ EDGE Bryson Jennings will kick off a three day span where three of the team’s major remaining targets will announce their commitments.
Jennings announced on Tuesday that he would be making his announcement on Thursday evening around 7:00 PM EST. All indications seem to point to this being an announcement via social media around that time.
Back on June 10th, Jennings, the No. 21 EDGE in the 2022 class and the No. 13 player from the state of Virginia, announced his top five of North Carolina, Kentucky, Penn State, Virginia and Virginia Tech. As we enter the eve of the commitment, this appears to be a two-horse race for his services between the Tar Heels and the Hokies. Jennings visited both schools during the month of June, with the Tar Heels back during the middle of the month.
One of the big questions that some may have is why are the Tar Heels taking another edge rusher with both Malaki Hamrick and Beau Atkinson already committed to the class and the answer is competitive depth. While the staff has done a tremendous job of building the depth quickly and efficiently on this roster, edge rusher is still an area where they are a little bit thin in terms of bodies. With Tomon Fox and Tyrone Hopper both guaranteed to be departed at season’s end following their super senior year, there is no doubt that the staff made this an emphasis in the class and would like to add a third to the group they already have.
The prediction forecasts seem to think that the Tar Heels might just be able to get that done on Thursday. The first and lone crystal ball was cast today on 247Sports by national recruiting analyst Brian Dohn in favor of the Tar Heels with a confidence level of seven. Over on Rivals, they too only have one logged FutureCast, one that is also in favor of Mack Brown and crew from the site’s national recruiting director, Mike Farrell. Expect more predictions to roll in for him early in the morning, but the Tar Heels seem to be favorites going in.
The Tar Heels look as if they may have made the perfect pitch for Jennings in his back in mid-June. The staff has done a great job of recruiting the edge rushers, a major position of need for the team in this class, and now they are closing in on making a serious haul at the position in this class while continuing to strengthen the dominance in the state of Virginia under Mack Brown.
Prediction: North Carolina
