It’s officially official, Bill Belichick is the head coach of the Tar Heels. After a report last week from Jonathan Jones confirmed that Belichick was still yet to sign his contract, the legendary NFL head coach put pen to paper on Thursday morning to further solidify that he will be the head coach of the Tar Heels this season.

As originally reported when he was first hired, the deal will be a 5-year, $50 million deal, but only the first three seasons will be guaranteed. In the contract that was released today, it says that Belichick will be paid on the last business day of every calendar month so long as he is the head coach of the team.

The $10 million a year will be the most that the Tar Heels have ever paid a head coach, doubling what the team was paying Mack Brown previously.

One scary thing about the contract that was confirmed today is the buyout number which starts out at $10 million but drops to $1 million after June 1, 2025. While this might be concerning, the fact that the contract is signed is huge because it eliminates that legal gray area that was there prior that could have made it easier for NFL teams to swipe him away.

In terms of incentives, there are a bunch built into the contract with everything from wins to conference title game appearances to playoff appearances. Here is a look at the full list of incentives (click on the arrow to go through all of them).

This contract shows that this athletic department and the board members are clearly invested in taking this football program, something we have been asking for from them since Mack Brown’s first tenure in Chapel Hill.
