The first official visit weekend in Chapel Hill concluded earlier today in what might be the most important summer of Mack Brown’s second stint with the program. Five of the six prospects that are on campus this weekend are uncommitted at this time and the one that isn’t is committed to Carolina. Just getting these guys on campus shows that the Tar Heels are in the race to land their commitments. So the question is, which of these five prospects do the Tar Heels have a chance to land when it’s all said and done? Here is a ranking of the guys that the Tar Heels have the best chance of landing from this weekend.
5. 4✮ CB Jameer Grimsley- Tampa Catholic (Tampa, FL)
Grimsley was one of the more surprising visitors of the month considering where it feels like the Tar Heels stand in this one. He is scheduled to visit Alabama, Florida State, Michigan and Penn State throughout the month and it feels like they all are ahead of the Tar Heels in the pecking order. Getting him on campus for the weekend is nice, but this one just isn’t happening.
4. 4✮ ATH Jonathan Paylor- Hugh M. Cummings (Burlington, NC)
There was a period of time where it seemed likely that Paylor was not going to take an official visit with the Tar Heels, but they found out on Thursday that he would be coming this weekend. The staff has a lot of work to do to even get themselves into the runner up spot in this race that feels like it is firmly in South Carolina’s control right now. The only reason to give the Tar Heels any shot here is because of how many trips to campus he has taken and the proximity, but this one is highly unlikely to go their way.
3. TE Timothy Lawson- Bishop Verot (Fort Myers, FL)
Lawson is one of two tight ends that the Tar Heels will have on campus this month as they search for their second commitment at the position in the class. The Tar Heels are not the favorite in this one, but they are a part of a group that has a chance to make a push for him this month and put pressure on that favorite, TCU. There feels like there is opportunity here for the Tar Heels, but it will be hard to overtake the Horned Frogs unless they falter.
2. 3✮ DL Marcus Downs- Riverside (Greer, SC)
The Tar Heels have picked up some major steam with Downs since he announced that he was going to be on campus this weekend. The thought coming into the month is that this is a relatively wide open recruitment, but so far Chapel Hill is the only visit that he has set at this point. If the staff can put together a strong pitch this weekend, it could be too high of a bar to overcome for some of the other SEC schools that could eventually get those other official visits.
1. 4✮ RB Tovani Mizell- Western (Fort Lauderdale, FL)
The Tar Heels are looking to add a second commitment to the backfield in this 2024 class and they feel very close to landing that with Mizell. Kentucky has made a push here and Oklahoma has also entered the running for him, so this is far from a guarantee, but the staff probably still feels confident going in. With them entering the month in the lead, as long as they don’t drop the ball, you have to feel pretty confident that the Tar Heels can walk away with his commitment in the end.
