The Tar Heels are furiously searching for a highly-touted quarterback in the 2026 class and that search became even more important on Tuesday afternoon.
As he announced on his social media earlier this afternoon, 2026 3✮ QB Zaid Lott has decommitted from the Tar Heels and is flipping to Syracuse. “After much reflection, I have decided to forgo my commitment to the University of North Carolina,” he said in his post. “This choice was tough, but I believe it’s the best step for my future.” Lott had been committed to the Tar Heels since last June.
Lott, the No. 60 quarterback and No. 38 player in the state of North Carolina, hails from Providence Day School in Charlotte, NC and comes off of his first season as a starter for the school. In 12 games this past season, he threw for 2,869 yards and posted a 29-6 touchdown-to-interception ratio while completing 58.2% of his passes. He also ran for 285 yards and seven touchdowns on 75 rush attempts.
With his decommitment, the Tar Heels sit at eight commitments in the 2026 class and the class now ranks No. 25 overall and No. 7 in the ACC according to the 247Sports Composite Team Rankings. As for the quarterback position, the Tar Heels are still in good shape, as they have hosted multiple quarterbacks in the last few weeks that they are pursuing heavily and could be hosting more in the next month.
