Heel Tough Blog: 2025 #1 Recruit to Announce His Commitment Tomorrow

On3

While all the attention has been on the search for a new football coach, the news hasn't slowed down on the basketball recruiting front, and tomorrow, the Tar Heels will find out if they did enough to land the #1 player in the 2025 recruiting class, AJ Dybantsa. Last week, Dybantsa narrowed down his recruitment to four schools, including UNC. The other schools that made the cut list, were Alabama, BYU, and Kansas, with the race believed to be between the Tar Heels and Jayhawks.

Dybantsa is 6-9 small forward, from the state of Utah. He was last on the UNC campus back in September, with BYU being the last school to host the top recruit. Given the struggles that the current Carolina Basketball team has experienced to start the season, you can see why they value Dybantsa so much, as his skill set has gone from a desire to have on the roster, to a need if UNC wants to compete for a national championship in the years to come.

Adam Finklestein is the Scouting Director for 247Sports, and here is how he describes Dybantsa’s game in a scouting report: A 6-foot-9 jumbo wing with a wingspan exceeding 7 feet, an emerging 200-plus-pound frame and an advanced understanding of how to score from his spots (even in a half-court game), AJ Dybantsa is the best prospect in high school basketball. Dybantsa possesses a lethal pull-up game with a high release and a smooth ball rotation. He's been a celebrated prospect since before he entered high school. Yet he has avoided the pitfalls of early stardom by consistently improving his game at each level. He was the leading scorer in the 2023 Peach Jam as an underclassman and shows flashes of untapped potential on defense thanks to his size and movement skills. The bottom line is this: Dybantsa controls his own future. If he continues on his current path, then there's no one in high school basketball with more potential than him.

Carolina currently has two commits in the 2025 recruiting class, in four-stars Derek Dixon, and Isaiah Denis. Adding Dybantsa would put this class in the conversation to be among not only the best in the country but among the best that Hubert Davis has been able to put together as UNC’s head coach.

Dybantsa will announce his decision tomorrow on ESPN’s First Take. Stay tuned to the Heel Tough Blog, for full coverage of his commitment.
