The game of ESPN’s High School Football Kickoff Weekend event was played earlier today as Rabun Gap-Nacoochee and Baylor School faced off in Chattanooga, TN. Among those playing in this star-studded game was Tar Heels’ 2025 3✮ TE commit Marshall Pritchett, who kicked off his senior season last week with a very solid showing against Benedictine High School.
Pritchett was targeted the most of anyone in the game but a rough showing from quarterback Gavin Owens limited could have been a massive day for him. He was targeted a team-high 15 times but caught just eight of them for 72 yards, the only eight that were catchable passes.
There was a lot to like about this performance from Pritchett. He caught the ball really well throughout, only dropping one pass, which came on diving play that didn’t even count. He showed his tremendous route running ability and was constantly creating separation with how crisp and clean his routes were. We didn’t see him block a lot, but when he did he was effective. He did a solid job of chipping the defensive ends when lined up as an inline tight end and was even more effective as a blocker when split out as a wide receiver. There were a few moments where he should have been able to get a hat on a defender, but it was clear that he recognized his mistake on those plays.
With that, we have officially put a bow on a huge opening weekend of high school football. Next week, we will look at one of the team’s top remaining targets in the 2025 class, 3✮ CB Antavious Richardson.
