Sunday gave the Tar Heels one of their biggest commitments in the 2024 cycle in the form of in-state receiver Jordan Shipp. Unfortunately, shortly before his announcement, the team received the news that one of their commits was reopening his commitment.
Earlier this afternoon, 3✮ ATH Carlos Mitchell Jr. announced via social media that he was decommitting from the Tar Heels. He had committed to the team back on June 11th over Central Florida, Kentucky and others following his official visit to campus.
Mitchell Jr.’s decommitment doesn’t come as a shock after rumors that this was coming for the better part of July. This move almost certainly means that the staff is looking at one of the team’s three remaining defensive back commits as the future of the STAR position that Mitchell Jr. looked as if he would play. The timing is also interesting with 4✮ S Malcolm Ziglar expected to commit tomorrow.
While there might be some questions about where that nickel corner comes from in this class, this is not a significant setback, especially when you consider what the team added in the 2023 class. If this is what clears the space needed for Ziglar, then it is a worthwhile trade off.
