Heel Tough Blog: 2021 Scouting Reports- Tychaun Chapman

ChatSports.com

One night after the start of spring football in the state of North Carolina, the state of Virginia got their spring season underway. One of the players who got their season going on Friday night was Tar Heels’ 2022 4✮ WR Tychaun Chapman, one of the four commits that Mack Brown and his staff have landed to this point in this class.

As a whole, it was a slow night for Chapman and the Princess Anne offense, but he had a solid night individually. Chapman touched the ball 18 times and totaled 130 yards of scrimmage while splitting his time both in the backfield and out wide. The bulk of his touches came on the ground, where he finished the night with 75 yards on fourteen carries, while he caught just four of his nine targets for 55 yards, the bulk of which came on his final catch of the night.

It may not have been the best performance of his career, but Chapman was able to show why he is an extremely exciting member of the Tar Heels 2022 class. He was able to showcase his strong acceleration and short area quickness, something that will be important when it comes to route running in a more complex scheme. That acceleration combines with his great straight line speed that makes him dangerous in open space. He wasn’t quite able to show off his shiftiness as much as he did on film a year ago, but he still made a couple of defenders miss by putting his foot in the ground and even pulling out a spin move at one point. The one concern that comes from this game is the drops, but this is the first game of the season and reading into one game is never smart. The takeaway from his night is that he is an exciting position player that will be able to be used in a variety of different ways and will make plays when he has the ball in his hands.

With so many major Tar Heel targets in the next few classes playing their football here in the spring, we will be watching some games during the week to get a look at as many targets as possible. Keep an eye on the site throughout the week for the latest scouting reports and continued offseason updates.
